7TH WORLD GAMES 2005 DUISBERG, GERMANY - TWO SILVERS AND BRONZE FOR GREAT BRITAIN! KATH PEBERDY INJURED IN FINALS

The World Games are held every four years for many sports which are not included in the Olympic program. As well as Sports Acrobatics, the Games include tumbling, synchro and double mini trampoline and Rhythmic Gymnastics which is now included in the Olympics. This year the 7th World Games took place in Duisberg, Germany and what a contest we had to look forward to!

The Great Britain team performed superbly and Yvonne Welsh and Julie Cameron from Wakefield and our Men’s Four from Deerness Valley, David Scott, Stuart McKenzie, Scott Patterson and Barrie Hindson both won Silver Medals. The Men’s four finished only three thousandths of a point ( 0.003) behind the Ukranians who won Gold!

Mark Fyson and Christopher Jones also performed well to win Bronze in the Men’s Pairs, and Zoe McLean came 4th just    0.10 outside a bronze medal. Sad news for former World Champion Tumbler Kath Peberdy who was injured in the Finals after landing badly on her second run of full, full straight double somersault and landed on the surrounding safety mat but badly injured her left foot which will require surgery. Get well soon Kath!  Congratulations also to Mark Alexander and Milnes on a great 4th place in the Trampoline Men’s Synchro Finals

Great to see the USA placing 4th in the Mixed Pairs Finals although out of touch with the medal positions, it’s good to see US Acrobats doing so well at World Games and this will give great encouragement to Acro Clubs outside the long established countries.

A superb performance from Anna Katchalova and Revaz Gurgenidze from Russia with dynamic, exciting and expresive routine winning a well deserved 29.307 and the Gold medal, and a terrific performance from the Belgian Pair who won Silver! There were excellent performances from the Russians and Ukranians who, as expected, dominated the medal positions in the Acro events. GB’s Mark Fyson and Christopher Jones improved on their 4th place in qualifications and performed free headstand 360 with good tumbling and a well executed shoulder pitched double to win a well deserved bronze medal.

What a contest, the World’s top two Men’s Fours battling for the Gold medals and it could not have been any closer! Another fantastic performance from the GB Men’s Four saw them win Silver just three thousandths of a point behind the Ukranian Team in Duisberg! Barrie Hindson, Stuart McKenzie,Scott Patterson and David Scott who were 2nd in qualifications saw the Russians perform Bridge 4 Tower Top one arm asit to one arm handstand lower one arm staddle planch with full in and triple pitch to catch, triple pike to support landing and full in back out straight. The GB Team performed double layout and a fantastic routine, and clean all the way through to set up a nail biting finish.

The Ukranians had a few minor errors on somersault catches but their combined routine included bridge 4 high tower top one arm press to handstand transition one arm straddle lever one arm top plant to earn them the Gold medals in a very exciting Final.

GB’s other Men’s Four Adam Denny, Adam Dobbs, Adam Smith and Andrew Price came  3rd in Qualifiers in the Balance and the Dynamic routines.

Tumbling - 3 From GB in Finals - Zoe 4th!

Wakefield’s Zoe Mclean finished 4th just 0.1 behind Yuliya Hall from the USA in bronze position. Kathryn Peberdy also qualified for Finals finishing in 8th position. The Gold medal went to Olena Chabanenko from the Ukraine who won by 3 clear points from Russia’s Anna Korobeynikova who won Silver.

In the Men’s Tumbling events, incredible skills were performed with start values to match. Great Britain’s Damian Walters came 5th with 71.40. Josef Wadecki from Poland won Gold with a first run consisting of Barani, with flick, full in full out, straight, whip, whip, flic, miller and 2nd run of Round off, double straight, whip, flic, full in, straight, whip whip full full tucked!

Double Mini Trampoline - Nicola comes 6th

Britain’s Nicola Pugh came 6th in the World Gmes DMT Finals performing Barani, Double straight in her first run, and jump, half out tuck, double pike in her 2nd to score 64.50. The Gold Medal was won by Canada’s Sarah Charles who scored 71.40 performing half out piked, full in full out straight in her first run and finished 3.6 points ahead of her nearest rival Nicole Pachecho from Portugal. Shelley Klochan from the USA won bronze with 65.80.

In the Men’s DMT the gulf between the 2 sets of competitors was almost 8 points so I have only listed the top six. Canada performed superbly with two out of the top 4 including Silver  for Denis Vachon who performed piked Rudi out, triple piked in his first run and a great full in Rudi straight, full full straight in his second. Bulgaria’s Radostin Rachev won Gold scoring 74.50 including Full in half out, straight Miller straight in his first run and finished with Rudi out piked full, full straight in his 2nd. Nico Gartner from Germany won Bronze.
